The cattle price has moved along well in the past couple of weeks as supplies have become shorter. Demand is reported as being slightly better which is encouraging.
The strength of conventional cattle trade has helped move things along, however the organic price still remains at least 40p / kg deadweight to the better.
Many producers remain tight for grazing and the forward forage situation looks desperate. Unless we see significant rainfall many may need to feed cattle at grass or sell as stores to see their way through the summer.

The consumer demand for organic lamb is poor; however the lamb trade across the board is good. The exporters are the key buyers fuelling the trade to its current dizzy heights. The organic lambs are being sold as conventional in many cases, where possible OLMC is still finding a small premium for the organic market.
The new season lamb numbers in the conventional market are starting to come forward; it will be a few weeks before we see numbers of organic new season.

Dry spring could reduce crop harvest by a third, warns farmers

Mark Avery hits out at politicians and farmers as he flies RSPB nest
Departing director of conservation at RSPB vents anger at neglect of UK's environment, accusing farmers of being "fundamentally anti-environment." He says that "at almost every opportunity, the National Farmers Union (NFU) chooses the option which will harm the environment – it is weak on greenhouse gas reduction measures, in favour of biofuels, argues against improving the effectiveness of farming grants, is against clamping down on pesticide use and wants its members to carry out what will be an ineffective cull of badgers.”
    The Guardian (4 May)

Farm’s pesticide has killed 30,000 of my honeybees
Beekeeper Kate Huet, found a quarter of her bees dead and claims they were killed by chemical pesticides. The Wildlife Incident Investigation Scheme is working to identify which pesticide was used.

Global warming blamed for 20% food price rises
The drop in crop productivity is a result of plant dehydration. Scientists believe climate change is responsible for the recent reduced rainfall and higher temperatures.
    The Independent, (6 May)

Were the foot and mouth culls really necessary?
According to scientists a mass culling of cattle may not be necessary if the foot and mouth disease comes back. New research has found that the virus can be detected in cattle up to 24 hours before they become infectious and could then be controlled by vaccination.
